Why the first AI use case sets expectations
The first task someone gives AI at work does more than test the tool. It sets expectations about what AI is “good for,” how much trust it deserves, and whether it feels helpful or risky.
If that first experience goes sideways, confidence drops fast. People don’t think “this was the wrong task.” They think “AI is unreliable,” and adoption quietly dies.
That’s why early use cases matter. Not because they need to be impressive, but because they need to be safe, bounded, and predictable.
The “tempting but dangerous” categories
New users tend to start with tasks that feel high-value and familiar. Unfortunately, these are often the worst places to begin.
Common examples:
- Drafting policies, procedures, or official responses from scratch
- Writing legal, HR, or compliance language with no source material
- Summarizing topics the user doesn’t already understand
- Producing “final” answers instead of working drafts
- Making decisions that require institutional context or authority
These tasks look efficient. They also create the highest risk of confident errors that are hard to spot.
What usually goes wrong (and why it’s subtle)
The failure mode is rarely obvious nonsense.
Instead, AI produces writing that:
- Sounds professional
- Matches the expected tone
- Uses plausible structure and terminology
- Feels authoritative
But the content is ungrounded. Assumptions slip in. Details are invented. Edge cases are ignored. And because the output looks official, it often gets reused without proper review.
This is especially dangerous in environments where written language carries implied approval or policy weight.
The tool didn’t “malfunction.” It did exactly what it was asked to do, without the context it needed.

Someone asks AI to draft a policy response to a stakeholder inquiry. No existing policy text is provided. No constraints are stated. The goal is speed.
The result looks polished and reasonable. It is also wrong in small but meaningful ways. Terms don’t align with internal definitions. Obligations are implied that don’t exist. Exceptions are missing.
Now the organization has a document that looks official but isn’t defensible.
The risk wasn’t AI writing poorly. The risk was treating AI as a source instead of a processor.
Safer alternatives that still save time
You don’t need to avoid AI. You need to change the shape of the task.
Better first uses include:
- Rewriting or clarifying existing text you already trust
- Summarizing documents you’ve read and understand
- Creating outlines, checklists, or comparison tables
- Extracting themes from known inputs
- Turning rough notes into structured drafts
In all of these cases, the AI is working on your material, not inventing it.
The output becomes easier to evaluate because you already know what “right” looks like.
The rule for deciding “not yet”
A simple test for early AI tasks:
If you wouldn’t trust a new intern to do it without supervision, don’t give it to AI yet.
High-risk tasks usually share three traits:
- No clear source material
- High consequences if wrong
- Reviewers lack time or expertise to verify details
Those are “not yet” tasks. Save them for later, when inputs, guardrails, and review processes are in place.
