what's the difference?
Think about animals. If you take a trip to the Zoo you can observe the animals and how they interact with the environment they are in. It can be exciting to see the animals and it is often a great experience. Now think about going on a safari and seeing those same animals in their natural environment, the experience is completely different. The same can be said for creating an environmental portrait. Some people are much more relaxed in their natural environment.

Environmental portraits are executed in the subject’s usual environment; this can be their home or their workplace and aims to highlight the subjects life and surroundings. By photographing a person in their usual environment, it is thought that you will be able to better illuminate their character, and therefore portray the essence of their personality, rather than merely a likeness of their physical features. Clients in their usual environment tend to be more at ease, relaxed and more likely to express themselves naturally, letting their personality come through, as opposed to in a studio, which can be a rather intimidating and artificial experience.
